Is Donald Trump full of self belief, deluded or leveraging the power of branding?

Donald Trump has announced he is running again for US President in 2024 – despite a dismal performance in the mid term elections. Is he simply full of self belief, deluded or leveraging the power of branding? Let’s explore this and how it translates into some meaningful points for entrepreneurs too…

IS DONALD TRUMP FULL OF SELF BELIEF? IS HE DELUDED? OR IS HE LEVERAGING THE POWER OF A BRAND? WHAT DONALD TRUMP CAN SHOW ENTREPRENEURS ABOUT SELF AWARENESS AND IMPACT...

As entrepreneurs are we guilty of being a bit deluded when it comes to our business success a bit like Donald Trump and his Presidential ambitions?
 
Donald Trump has announced that he will stand for election again despite “bruising” mid term elections. Despite the history telling him he he’s failed at it before, despite the experts saying he doesn’t have the skills, and despite the evidence of the mid term vote – he is going once again to try and run for US President.
 
He quotes that America needs a leader, not a politician or unseasoned candidate and rolled out a speech not unlike the American carnage speech of his first campaign. 
 
Is this unwavering self belief or delusion? You’ll probably be thinking it’s delusion and having a little scoff to yourself at how preposterous he is considering the reaction from his own party – heck even his own family have said they are not going to support the campaign! 
 
So at what point does unwavering self belief become delusion? Let’s look at it  in this way – isn’t he just doing what we are all doing as entrepreneurs and giving ultimate faith in himself? Isn’t that what all the gurus tell you to do “don’t give up on your dreams”, “just keep going” so you do – you keep going and going, even if it’s seemingly getting you nowhere.
 

SELF BELIEF BECOMES DELUSION WHEN YOU STOP BEING DYNAMIC...

The key shift from self belief into delusion comes when you don’t CHANGE, MODIFY OR DEVELOP anything to keep the pursuit of your dream alive.
 
Think about it:
  • Trump hasn’t changed any policies
  • Trump hasn’t changed any behaviour
  • Trump hasn’t developed anything new in his armour
He’s just blithely going about trying to replicate what failed before. That’s when it becomes delusional – or relying on leveraging his brand. 
 
What is undeniable is that Donald Trump has built a personal brand that has amassed a cult like following – people who will believe anything he says, will support any action and follow his lead when it comes to opinion. Is this latest move not about delusion, but leveraging the power of his brand? It could be, but when does the brand trust erode enough that it loses its power? As he is not developing anything new, or bringing any change to the table, surely there is a shelf life to his brand authority? And what can that teach us entrepreneurs about our own effectiveness?
 

OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS SELF AWARENESS AND DEVELOPMENT SHOULD FUEL OUR SELF BELIEF...

Think about your own business and what it’s trying to achieve. Whether it’s paying you a full time wage, or giving you freedom to work less – if you are pursuing something in your business and you are not making changes and evolving to achieve them, I’m sorry to be brutal but you are just as delusional as Donald.
 
Are you:
 
  • Expecting people to invest in your services but not investing in yourself?
  • Using the same methods day in day out without looking at the evidence of the impact they are having?
  • Surrounding yourself with people who only say yes rather than positively challenge you and seek for you to do better?
  • Blaming the algorithms and how social media companies are not fair when they are letting you operate for free on their platforms?
  • Using negative talk to explain why people are not buying or engaging?
If you’ve said yes to more than one of these, then you could be as deluded as Donald Trump.
 
Self belief isn’t just pursuing something relentlessly and suddenly making it one day. Self belief is a commitment to a set of goals that you work for, evolve and grow to achieve. You cannot expect your business to thrive without investing in it.  You cannot drive your impact forward without evolving with the emerging business landscape.
 
Maybe it’s time you thought about investing in you and your Business differently:
 
What’s going to make YOU better at what you do?
 
How can your brand be FITTER for the challenging economic environment?
 
What can you learn to be able to adapt, evolve and take advantage of the opportunities out there?
